Chapter History

The Omicron Sigma Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. was founded in the early winter of 1987, serving brothers residing in Rutherford County and the surrounding areas. Since that day, the brothers of Omicron Sigma Lambda have become widely respected throughout Rutherford County for making a difference in the community while maintaining a steadfast commitment to manly deeds, scholarship, and love for all mankind.

Our chapter has taken pride in the accomplishments we have made for over 25 years in Rutherford County. We have developed strong ties to the community and our school systems though our volunteerism.  Annually we award scholarships to deserving young men from our community who go on to enroll and attend college, both in Tennessee and afar.  We also provide or partner with a number of community based events to educate, empower, and strengthen our community.  These events include:  Candidate Forums, Voter Registration Drives, Health Fairs, Male Mentoring Programs, Kids for Creative Arts Camp, and many, many more.  Many of these program allow us to implement our fraternities national programs:  Project Alpha, Go To High School Go To College, A Voteless People is a Hopeless People, Brothers Keeper, and High Chair to Higher Education.

Additionally, we provide opportunities for social interaction and professional networking in our communities through events such as:  Cocktails & Conversations, MTSU & TTU Homecoming Tailgates & Events, OSL Scholarship Gala, and more.  Through local and national partners such as the Boys & Girls Club of Rutheford County, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Middle Tennessee, and the March of Dimes we are able to raise significant funds to support their efforts and implement programs and activities that assist those partners in fulfilling their mission.

Lastly, Omicron Sigma Lambda is a strong supporter of our brothers and sisters in the “Divine 9″ as well as other community organizations.   We are annual participants in Alpha Kappa Alpha, Pi Nu Omega Chapter’s Taste of AKA and Delta Sigma Theta, Murfreesboro Alumnae Chapter’s Juneteenth celebration.  We also work diligently to support the First Baptist Church of Murfreesboro, which serves as the host location for our Chapter Meetings, and other entities such as the Discovery Center, St. Clair Senior Center, and Oakland High School (through our Men of Distinction Program).

Beyond our service to the community the Omicron Sigma Lambda Chapter serves to advise two collegiate chapters of our fraternity:

The Kappa Xi Chapter (founded in 1975) at Middle Tennessee State University and The Omicron Phi Chapter (founded in 1982) at Tennessee Technological University.  One of our most important charges, advising and ensuring the success of these chapters and their members is paramount to ensuring the longterm success of our fraternity and also ensuring these young men become productive members of society.

Omicron Sigma Lambda has witnessed a strong growth in our chapter over the past decade and we continue to grow and expand as an organization.  As we move onward and upward as a chapter, we look forward to continuing the tradition of our organization's founders to develop leaders and being productive members of society.
